Natural and Effective Dry Socket Treatment

Walter Tatch, DDS, FACOMS, Diplomate, ABOMS, Fellow, AACS

Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is the most common complication following tooth extractions. Dry socket results when the blood clot at the site of the tooth extraction fails to develop, or is dislodged or dissolved before the wound has healed.

When the blood clot is displaced from the extraction socket, the underlying bone and nerves are exposed, resulting in intense pain not only in the socket but also along the nerves that radiate to the side of the face. The socket becomes inflamed and may fill with food debris, adding to the pain. The dry socket symptoms usually begin 3-4 days after dental extraction and can last weeks.

Over-the-counter medications alone won't be enough to treat dry socket pain. Dentists or oral surgeons can offer treatments to relieve pain, such as placement of dental paste/iodoform gauze, however these are associated with pain and require removal. Patients that develop dry socket usually ask for pain medications and are frequently given opioids. They usually have to come back to their dental professional multiple times.

StellaLife® VEGA® Oral Care Gel has 14 natural active ingredients that are designed to immediately provide pain relief, accelerate healing and add antimicrobial properties.  Combination of VEGA® Gel and Rinse provide effective, natural treatment of dry socket to dental patients. Patients continue applying the products at home, which provides an on-going treatment for dry sockets.
