Case Presentation and Probiotics Discussion by Walter Tatch, DDS, FACOMS

Education

In this presentation, Dr. Walter Tatch discusses how probiotics, nutritional support, and microbiome management may serve as valuable adjuncts in modern implant dentistry and periodontal care.

Using two compelling clinical cases involving a husband and wife who both experienced catastrophic full-arch dental implant failures, Dr. Ted explores the diagnostic process used to identify potential causes of implant loss, including systemic health conditions, medications, allergies, oral hygiene challenges, and peri-implant disease. After ruling out many traditional risk factors, attention turned to the oral microbiome and the possibility that bacterial imbalance contributed to the progression of peri-implantitis and bone loss.

The presentation reviews treatment protocols used to reconstruct both patients, including implant replacement, bone grafting, vitamin D, vitamin K2, and magnesium supplementation, antimicrobial oral rinses, oral and gut probiotics, and comprehensive maintenance programs. Long-term follow-up demonstrated stable bone levels, healthy soft tissue, and successful implant function.

Dr. Tatch also examines emerging research on oral probiotics, gut health, and microbiome science. Topics include the relationship between probiotics and periodontal disease, dental caries prevention, biofilm management, immune system support, and the potential connection between oral bacteria and systemic health. The lecture highlights specific probiotic strains that have been studied for their ability to reduce pathogenic bacteria, support healthy oral flora, and improve clinical outcomes when used alongside conventional dental treatment.
