Dry Mouth/ Xerostomia Symptoms
Dry Mouth can lead to an increased risk of cavities, gingivitis (gum disease), and bad breath. Dry mouth occurs when you don't produce enough saliva, which contains antimicrobial properties and lubricates your mouth perpetually during the day. Saliva helps to keep oral tissues healthy and prevent infection through control of bacteria and fungi in the mouth. It also helps to prevent tooth decay by washing away food particles and preventing acids from attacking your tooth enamel.
There are a number of steps you can take to help minimize dry mouth, including:
- Sipping water often and during meals
- Avoiding drinks with caffeine, such as coffee, tea and some sodas
- Sugarless gum or sugarless hard candy to stimulate saliva flow
- Daily use of an all-natural, non-staining, sugar-free, non-GMO rinse
Dry Mouth/ Xerostomia Causes
Dry mouth (known by its medical term, xerostomia) results from a reduced flow or absence of saliva, and its prevalence increases with age. The most common causes of dry mouth are:
- Side effect of certain medications
- Side effect of smoking and drinking
- Side effect of dehydration
- Side effect of stress
- Side effect of cancer therapy (radiation/chemotherapy)
- Side effect of certain diseases and infections like Sjogren’s Syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis and other auto-immune diseases
