Shirley Gutkowski, RDH, BSDH, is a popular speaker and author. She has written hundreds of articles and social media posts on topics that interest her and her readers: prevention and early detection. Her book series; The Purple Guide, is the only book series developed and published with the sole purpose to help clinical dental hygienists practice. In 2016, she started Primal Air a practice limited to orofacial myofunctional therapy, think yoga for the face. Along with breathing retraining she sees clients with sleep apnea, recurrent braces, thumb sucking and other breathing and functional disorders of the facial muscles. In 2004 she won the APEX award for her series of oral health for Diabetes Self-Management, 2006 she was the president of the Wisconsin Dental Hygienists Association, in 2007 she was awarded the leadership award from the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry, and is the 2008 winner of the Marquette University Alumna of the Year in Health Sciences distinction.
